Transportation Roll ‘n’ Write Game

Now that Valentines Day is over, my class is moving on to Community Helpers & Transportation. I made this Roll ‘n’ Write game to hopefully spark an interest in writing practice, and it was a huge hit. Everybody wanted a turn with it the first day it was out. There’s something about games involving dice that are so much fun for them.

To prepare, print out the Roll ‘n’ Write mat on card stock and either laminate or slip it into a page protector. Write letters on the sides of a wooden cube to make the dice. I usually put dot stickers or masking tape squares on the cube so that I can remove it, and put new letters on later.

To play, children roll the die and write the letter they rolled in the first square, using a dry erase marker or dry erase crayon. They continue rolling and writing until all of the squares are filled up. When they are done, I asked them to count each letter and determine which had the most/least/same amount (we’ve been practicing more & less lately, too).

Some of them are really good at forming letters and some are still writing letter-like symbols, but I told them to do the best they can. I also told the children to bring their mat to me when they finished, and I’d take a picture of their work. I saved the photos in their portfolios.
