Here are some animal cards for the flannel board that you can use with the story, Annie and the Wild Animals, by Jan Brett.
To prepare these cards, print onto card stock paper, laminate and cut. If you want to use these on a flannel board, attach the hook side of velcro to the back of each picture. If you want to use these on a magnetic board or cookie sheet, attach magnetic tape to the back.
There are several ways to use these animal cards:
- Introduce the names of the animals to the children before or after the story.
- Use the animal pictures for counting games or addition and subtraction.
- Use the animal pictures for beginning sounds: “I spy an animal that begins with /m/.” [moose]
- Use the animal pictures for rhyming: “I spy an animal that rhymes with pear.” [bear]
- Place the pictures on the board as each one is mentioned in the story as you read.
- Have children place the pictures on the board as you read.
- Use the pictures for sequencing the animals in the correct order.
There are many other ways you could use these. If you have a great idea you would like to share with fellow teachers, please share in the comments section below!
