Here is my newest set of picture-word cards to add to the Picture Word Cards collection. This set has 13 Arctic animal cards. These word cards would be useful to use along with books and songs about Arctic animals, such as The Three Snow Bears, by Jan Brett and Baby Beluga by Raffi.
Using the cards in the classroom:
You can place these cards in a pocket chart on the wall of your writing center. I always include a set of picture-word cards in my writing center pocket chart that matches our current theme. (Our theme this month is Winter — you will also find a set of Winter word cards here.)
My pre-k kids take the word cards out of the pocket chart and take them to the table to copy onto their paper. It’s simple to slip them back into the pockets when they’re done.
You can also make little picture dictionaries by punching a hole in the corner and hooking them together with binder rings. I’ve provided a gray dot in the upper left corner to punch. You could also bind them with binding combs. The picture dictionaries work great if you don’t have space for a pocket chart, or if you want to keep other sets of picture word cards in the writing center.
You could also use the word cards to have children spell the words with magnetic letters or letter tiles.
More ideas for using these cards:
- Use them on a word wall.
- Hook them together on a binder ring to make a picture dictionary.
- Use the blank set to write words in other languages or other writing styles (e.g. D’Nealian). Or use them for modeled writing activities.
