This Butterfly Matching Game and more Bug Games will help children practice visual discrimination skills.

We’re getting ready to learn about bugs in my class because everywhere we look lately, there are bugs of all kinds! We have a caterpillar in a jar in our room who has been munching on basil leaves & we are watching, waiting, & hoping he will make a cocoon.

Butterfly Matching Game

In preparation for our bug studies, I have made some new Butterfly Matching Cards. Print out 2 copies onto cardstock, laminate, & cut out. I found so many beautiful butterfly pictures that I went a little overboard. Depending on the skill level of your students, you may or may not want to use all of these cards.

Ladybug What’s Different Game

This Ladybug “What’s Different” game is another way to practice visual discrimination skills. In this game, children will compare the two pictures on each mat and decide what is different in the pictures.

These cards can be used as a small group activity or a center activity, or use on a projector for a large group activity. When printing the set of cards, do not cut the cards apart on the line. Show children one page with the two pictures so they can compare the top and bottom pictures.

Example cards:

On the card above, children would compare the top and bottom picture to see what is different. The top picture has a different butterfly than the bottom. Everything else about the picture is the same.

On the card above, the bug is standing in a mud puddle on a rainy day in the top picture. In the bottom picture, there is no mud puddle.
