Preparation Tips for the Rainbow Alphabet Game:

Print out the Rainbow Alphabet Mat. You have two choices: uppercase and lowercase.

Create alphabet discovery bottles by pouring water into a clear plastic bottle, then add plastic letters, some sequins, and/or glitter. An empty water bottle works fine for this activity. For plastic letters, you can use plastic letter beads, letter tiles, or any plastic letter manipulative. Be sure to seal the lids with hot glue or duct tape. This prevents children from opening the bottles and spilling the contents.

Optionally, divide the 26 letters of the alphabet into 4 bottles and color code them:

  • Place the letters for the top arch of the rainbow in one bottle, color coded red: A, S, M, T, B, X, J, W, C.
  • Place the letters for the second arch of the rainbow in one bottle, color coded yellow: F, K, Z, R, V, N, L.
  • Place the letters for the third arch of the rainbow in one bottle, color coded green: Q, I, U, G, H, E.
  • Place the letters for the bottom arch of the rainbow in one bottle, color coded blue: D, Y, O, P.

Color code these letters if desired. You can use plastic letters in those colors or white letter tiles with color coded sequins added to the bottles. Additionally, you can add colored tape to the bottle lids.

As an alternative, you can add letters along with colored beads instead of the water.

Playing the Rainbow Alphabet Game:

Each child needs a Rainbow Alphabet mat, alphabet discovery bottles, and something to mark the letters. You can use either colored plastic chips or bingo markers. If you plan to use this activity as an Alphabet Center, I suggest using one laminated mat with colored plastic chips so you can reuse the activity multiple times. If you’re incorporating this activity into Small Group sessions, consider using either colored plastic chips or bingo markers.

Children shake the discovery bottle and find a letter. They then search for that letter on the Rainbow Alphabet Game Mat and mark it with a chip or bingo marker. Continue searching for letters and marking them until all have been found.
